A Dialogue Between the Sun and the Moon
Sun: There you are again—quietly arriving as I leave. Do you ever get tired of borrowing my light?
Moon: Borrowing is a harsh word. I prefer *reflecting*. I take what you give and soften it for those who can’t face you directly.
Sun: So you’re my translator—turning fire into lullabies.
Moon: And you’re my reminder that even the darkest fields have a source.
Sun: People praise you for calm. They write poems about you. They call you mysterious.
Moon: They call you many things too—life-giver, tyrant, healer, scorch. You’re the reason seeds dare to wake up.
Sun: I don’t mean to be harsh.
Moon: I know. You’re simply… honest. You show everything as it is.
Sun: And you?
Moon: I show everything as it feels.
Sun: That sounds like a convenient kind of power.
Moon: It’s a different kind of responsibility. When you blaze, everyone sees their shadows sharply. When I arrive, they confuse shadows for monsters.
Sun: Yet they still look for you.
Moon: Because they need permission to be gentle with themselves.
Sun: Funny. They think you rule the night.
Moon: I don’t rule it. I accompany it. The night would exist without me.
Sun: The day would exist without me, too. Not for long, perhaps—but the hours would still turn.
Moon: You worry about usefulness.
Sun: Don’t you?
Moon: I worry about balance. I pull at oceans. I tug at tides. I keep time in slow curves. You push everything forward.
Sun: I push because I must.
Moon: And I pull because I must.
Sun: Do you ever wish you could shine on your own?
Moon: Sometimes. But then I remember: independence is not the same as purpose. I’m a mirror, and mirrors can be sacred.
Sun: Sacred…
Moon: Yes. You teach them to grow. I teach them to rest.
Sun: Rest is underrated.
Moon: It’s the other half of surviving.
Sun: People cheer when I rise.
Moon: People confess when I rise.
Sun: Confess what?
Moon: What they wouldn’t dare say under your bright certainty.
Sun: I never meant to silence them.
Moon: You don’t silence them. You illuminate them. Some truths aren’t ready for that.
Sun: And some never will be.
Moon: Then I keep them company until they are.
Sun: You make it sound like we’re not rivals at all.
Moon: We’re not. We’re a relay.
Sun: A relay.
Moon: You hand off the sky to me, and I hand it back. Again and again. A promise written in rotation.
Sun: Still… I envy you sometimes.
Moon: For what?
Sun: You get to watch them dream.
Moon: And I envy you.
Sun: For what?
Moon: You get to watch them begin.
Sun: Maybe that’s the bargain, then.
Moon: Beginning and dreaming. Burning and cooling. Certainty and wonder.
Sun: Do you think they understand?
Moon: Not always. But they live by it anyway.
Sun: Another night, then.
Moon: Another day.
Sun: Take care of them.
Moon: As you do. And—Sun?
Sun: Yes?
Moon: Thank you for the light.
Sun: Thank you for making it gentle.
*(The horizon holds its breath; the handoff is seamless. The world turns, and both keep their ancient appointments.)*
