Start with the safety check:
- If there is burning smell, smoke, sparking, gas odor, repeated breaker trips, active leaking near electricity, or carbon monoxide concern, stop using the appliance and call a qualified technician or utility/emergency service as appropriate.
- Do not keep testing a failing appliance if it could cause water, fire, or gas damage.

Factor in energy and water use:

- Do not overvalue tiny savings. Estimate yearly savings and compare them against the extra purchase cost.
Ask the technician these questions:
- What exactly failed, and what caused it?
- Is this a one-time failure or a symptom of broader wear?
- Are parts readily available, and are they OEM or aftermarket?
- What warranty applies to the part and labor?
- If repaired, what other components are likely to fail soon?
- Is there evidence of leaks, overheating, corrosion, pest damage, or installation problems?
- Would you repair this model if it were yours, given its age and condition?
Use this decision formula:
- Total repair cost = diagnostic fee + parts + labor + likely follow-up risk + inconvenience.
- Total replacement cost = appliance price + delivery + install + accessories + haul-away + modifications - rebates or expected efficiency savings.
Choose repair when the issue is isolated, affordable, safe, and the appliance has useful life left. Choose replacement when the repair is expensive relative to replacement, parts are scarce, failures are recurring, safety is uncertain, or the appliance no longer fits your household needs. If the decision is close, choose the option that reduces the chance of another urgent breakdown at the worst possible time.
